What You’ll Need

How to Make a DIY Earth Day Mason Jar Planter

Prepare the Mason Jars

Begin by filling each mason jar with a layer of pebbles, about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. This layer will serve as a drainage system, helping to prevent waterlogging of the roots.

Add Potting Soil & Seeds/Herbs

Add a layer of potting soil on top of the pebbles, leaving enough space at the top for your herbs or seeds.

For planting established herbs, partially fill the jar with soil, insert the herb plant, and then fill in the remaining space with soil. If planting from seeds, fill the jar with potting soil, press 3 to 4 seeds gently into the soil, and cover them with a light dusting of soil.

Water the Herbs

Water your herbs lightly, adding about two tablespoons of water every other day to each jar. Adjust the watering frequency as needed based on the moisture level of the soil and the growth of the plants.

Label and Decorate Your Jars

Use tags to label each herb plant or add a personalized message or greeting on the back of the tag if you’re gifting the planters. Attach the tags to the jars using ribbon, creating a decorative touch.

Place your Mason Jar Herb Planters on a sunny windowsill for optimal sunlight exposure and watch your herbs thrive!
