These days bubble wrap is best known as a cushioning material used for packing and shipping. What most people don’t know is that bubble wrap was originally intended to be used as wallpaper. The inventors of bubble wrap, Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes, came up with the idea of creating plastic, textured wallpaper in the 1950s. However, this idea did not seem to sell well so the pair decided to market it as packing material instead. |

In 1960, Fielding and Chavannes founded Sealed Air Corporation and began mass production of bubble wrap. Of course they encountered several problems in their early days. For one thing, they discovered that the bubbles were leaking air so after some research, the company developed technology to place a barrier inside of the bubbles to prevent air from leaking and to enhance cushioning performance. With its quality improved, reusing bubble wrap for multiple packing projects became a possibility. IBM was the first company to utilize bubble wrap as packing material to protect their computers during shipment. |

Today bubble wrap is a standard supply found in a diverse range of industries. Bubble wrap comes in many different forms and sizes. You can find them as rolls of sheets or embedded inside of envelopes. Many electronic items are wrapped in anti-static bubble wrap to prevent static build-up that may cause damage to the electronic item.
