Classy Sweater StockingsDIY Christmas stocking ideas

Whether you have an old sweater tucked in the back of your closet that hasn’t seen the light of day in years, or you’re rummaging around your local thrift store, looking for good crafting supplies is the first step.

Sweaters of all shapes, sizes, and fabrics can be upcycled to make the first of our DIY Christmas stocking ideas—the sweater stocking.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Your recycled sweater of choice (the thicker the better)
  • Pins
  • Heavy duty scissors
  • Sewing machine (Stitching by hand is also an option)

How to Put It Together:

To bring the first of our DIY Christmas stocking ideas to life, start by printing out a stocking template, or drawing your own pattern on a piece of paper. Next, turn your sweater inside out and determine where you want to make your cuts. If you have a large enough sweater, you can easily make two stockings out of it.

To begin, pin your pattern onto the sweater and use your heavy duty scissors to cut out the shape. You could cut through one layer of sweater at a time or go through both at once. Once your stocking shapes are free, unpin the pattern and sew two stocking shapes together along the rim, about a half an inch inward. Make sure you leave the top open!

Once your stocking is sewn together, turn it rightside out and smooth the edges. At this point, you can choose to create a cuff at the top of your stocking, or use what’s left of your scrap sweater to add on additional finishing touches, such as poms or extra frills.

If it’s to your liking, cut out a thin cord of sweater material (about four inches long) and sew it to the top corner of your stocking, creating the loop you’ll be able to hang it up with.

Chic Denim Stockings

If you like the idea of upcycling your old clothing into creative Christmas stockings, try out these upcycled denim stockings! The thing that’s great about these DIY Christmas stocking ideas is that you can do whatever you want with them.

If you want to keep your denim stocking simple and sleek, you don’t have to add any embellishments at all—just enjoy the fabric! However, if you want to have fun with it, you can add patches, pockets, and belt loops around the rim. Use your imagination and see what cool add-ons you can come up with.

How to Put It Together:Chic Denim Stockings DIY Christmas Ideas

Similar to the tutorial above, the first step in bringing your denim stockings to life is acquiring a stocking template. Next, choose which part of the jeans you’ll want to use (consider working along the waistline where there are already belt loops and a pocket sewn on) and then turn them inside out. Pin down the template and cut one one stocking shape out. Repeat this step, but make sure that the pattern is flipped over. Otherwise, one side of your stocking will be inside out.

Use a sewing machine that’s equipped with a denim needle to sew your fabric together with the part that you want to show facing inward. Once you’re finished sewing, turn the stocking inside out to hide the seam. Add on any embellishments you want to include and finish the stocking off by transforming a piece of the hemline into a loop that you’ll hang it by.

Exciting Superhero Stockings

If you’re looking for DIY Christmas stocking ideas that are great for kids, this one’s perfect for the job. Whether your little one aspires to be a member of the Avengers, the Justice League, or the Teen Titans, they’re going to fall in love with these superhero-themed DIY Christmas stocking ideas from Paper Mart. With just a little bit of felt, ribbon, and a hot glue gun, you and your child can bring this no-sew stocking to life, just in time to save the day.

Start by choosing which superhero you’ll want to feature. If you’re doing these DIY projects for Christmas gifts, just think of the superhero your recipient admires the most. Once you’ve decided, you’ll know which colors of felt you’ll need to buy.

Here are a few examples:Superhero DIY Christmas Stockings

  • Captain America: blue for the stocking, red and white for embellishments.
  • The Flash: red for the stocking, white and yellow for embellishments.
  • Batman: black for the stocking, yellow for embellishments.
  • The Green Lantern: green for the stocking, white for embellishments.

How to Put It Together:

Just like with the DIY Christmas stocking ideas above, you’ll need to print out a stocking template or draw one on a sheet of paper. Once you have it, pin it onto your felt and cut out two stocking silhouettes. Next, use your hot glue gun to attach the two pieces along the rim (leaving the top untouched). When the glue has dried, turn your stocking inside out to hide the seam. Cut out your embellishments (your superhero’s logo) using the extra felt, and hot glue them to the front of the stocking. Last but not least, attach a loop of ribbon to the top right corner so that you can hang it up.
