How to Decorate a Christmas Tree

Before and after fanning out tree branches – it really makes a difference!

Step 1: Fluffing the Tree

Fluffing the branches is key to maximizing the fullness and beauty of your tree. Start at the bottom and work your way up, gently fanning out each branch in a five- or six-point star configuration. This will create a solid base that brings your tree to life. Spend time hereβ€”it’s worth it for a full, lush look.

Step 2: Adding Deco Mesh for Texture

Deco mesh is a fantastic way to fill any gaps while adding depth and a dramatic effect to your tree. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start at the Top: Fold the deco mesh in half and tuck the end into a branch at the top of your tree.
  2. Secure and Gather: Every 10 to 12 inches, gather the deco mesh and secure it using branches. For a sparser tree, consider using wire or pipe cleaners to hold it in place.
  3. Create Flow: Let the mesh flow naturally as you work downward; it will add a lovely, layered texture to your tree.

Step 3: Decorating with Ribbon

Ribbon is an ideal choice if you’re low on ornaments or just want to add an elegant touch. Wired ribbon works best, as it allows for easy looping and holds its shape well.

How Much Ribbon to Use: For an 8- to 12-foot tree, we recommend around six rolls of wired ribbon.

Attaching the Ribbon:

  • Tuck and Secure: Start by tucking one end of the ribbon into the branches, securing it with a branch wrap.
  • Loop or Weave: You can create loops by securing each one with a branch, or weave the ribbon in an β€œover and under” pattern for a layered look.
  • OPTIONAL: If you don’t have a lot of ribbon, cut it into smaller sections and strategically place pieces throughout the tree for a pop of color.

Step 4: Ornament Placement

Ornaments are often the final touch that brings your tree to life. Here’s the best way to achieve a balanced look:

  1. Start with Large Ornaments: Place the largest ornaments deep within the branches to fill empty spaces and add depth.
  2. Work Outward: Nest ornaments from the inside out to create dimension and help reflect the tree’s lights beautifully.
  3. Create Balance: Place ornaments in a loose checkerboard pattern to ensure even distribution across the tree.
  4. Add Special Ornaments Last: Specialty or keepsake ornaments should be the finishing touches for extra flair and sentiment.

How to Create a Christmas Tree Topper Bow

For a truly festive finish, a large, eye-catching bow at the top of the tree adds elegance and polish. Here’s how to create a beautiful, fluffy bow:

What You’ll Need:

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Wire: Cut a 28-inch piece of wire, fold it in half, and place it in the Bowdabra.
  2. Add Tails: Cut two 3-foot pieces of ribbon for the bow’s tails and center them in the Bowdabra.
  3. Create Loops: Layer both rolls of ribbon together. Begin making loops, twisting the ribbon at the center each time to keep the right side facing out. Make nine loops on each side (18 total).
  4. Secure the Bow: Use the Bowdabra wand to flatten the loops. Pull the wire ends through the loop and tighten to secure the bow’s center.
  5. Fluff and Arrange: Separate each loop for fullness. Twirl the tails for added elegance.
  6. Attach to Tree: Use the remaining wire to secure the bow to the top of the tree.
A fluffy, ornate bow can be the perfect topper for your Christmas tree.

With these steps, you’ll create a tree that’s festive, full, and gorgeously decorated. From fluffing branches to the final bow on top, each of these tips will help you make your Christmas tree the true star of the season!
