1920s: Humble Beginnings
Our story begins in the 1920s in a modest garage behind our rural Los Angeles home. Originally known as California Towel Supply, the family business was a labor of love for G.A. Frick, who served as both salesman and deliveryman, and Emma Frick, who managed bookkeeping and washing. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, we relocated to downtown Los Angeles, serving the restaurant and hospitality industries with a conservative approach and reinvesting profits into the business. Our dedication and hard work laid a solid foundation for the future.
1940s: Overcoming Adversity
The 1940s brought the challenges of World War II, including labor shortages as many rallied for the war effort. During this time, second-generation son Robert Frick balanced defense work with managing the company. Post-war, Robert rebranded us as Frick Paper Co., shifting our focus to consumables such as paper towels, tissue, janitorial, and shipping supplies. Acquiring Claremont Chemical Company expanded our capabilities, allowing us to manufacture our own cleaning products and provide comprehensive solutions to our customers.
1960s: Expansion and Innovation
Under the leadership of third-generation son John Frick, we rebranded as Paper Mart and moved into the City of Commerce. Acquiring Airex Paper Co. enabled us to manufacture our own paper towels and tissue. We revolutionized our sales strategy with a regional discount mail-order catalog, becoming pioneers in direct-mail distribution for the packaging industry. Embracing real-time computer systems enhanced our efficiency and customer service, and our inaugural direct-mail catalog marked a significant milestone in our history.
1970s: Specialization in Packaging Supplies
With the arrival of Tom Frick, another third-generation son, we made a strategic decision to specialize in packaging supplies. Tom’s fresh perspective and energy revitalized our team, driving us to elevate our expertise in this industry and solidifying our focus on providing top-quality packaging solutions.
1990s: Embracing the Internet
In the 1990s, Tom Frick and John Frick recognized the potential of the Internet and led Paper Mart to become a trailblazer in online retail. Fourth-generation daughter Buffy Frick Simoni introduced a dynamic, full-service approach, earning us the prestigious Stevie® Award for Sales & Customer Service in the eCommerce category.
