How to Decorate a Hat with Tulle

Tulle is an extremely versatile fabric that can be used in a variety of ways, and this is especially true when you choose it as an adornment for any of your favorite hats. Whether you’re decorating a floppy, felt number circa the ‘70s, a wide-brim sunshade, a cloche, a fedora, a Panama, a pillbox, a fancy derby hat, a Victorian riding hat, or even a cowboy hat, tulle can be your go-to material for adding the embellishments that make every piece of headwear a one-of-a-kind accessory. And there are several options for adding tulle to your many styles of hats.

For one thing, you can easily create a hatband using tulle. If you want something understated, add a hint of color with just one or two layers of your favorite color laid flat around the circumference of the hat where the base meets the brim. Or for more of an effect, bunch the tulle. You can secure the ends with hot glue or sew them right into the fabric, covering the edge with a brooch or clip of some sort. You can also tie a bow or create a pouf with excess tulle. And you can leave the ends dangling off the back for added flair. Once your band is in place, you may want to stick in feathers, apply a thinner band of ribbon, sequins, braided trim, or rhinestone chain over the top, or add embellishments like flowers or even birds, depending on how fancy you want to get.

However, you can take your experiments in adornment a step further. With a wider band of tulle, say from a bolt rather than a roll, you could cover your entire hat in layers of mesh for a soft, Victorian look, even bunching it at the back to create a bustling effect that hangs down behind you. Or you could run your gauzy hat band through the brim or over the sides of the hat, leaving the ends long enough to tie a voluminous bow under your chin or beneath your chignon to secure the hat to your head. You could also drape tulle over the front brim of your hat to create a veil that drops over your eyes or down to chin level. This is especially fashionable if you use shimmery or polka dot tulle.

If you’re the creative type, there’s almost no limit to what you can do with a roll or a bolt of tulle and a closet full of hats. And with the many options available on Paper Mart, you’ll find exactly what you need to craft the decorative headwear that will make you the envy of every party.
