Is there anything better than being gifted a homemade cake? Why yes, there actually is! How about receiving that homemade cake in the mail? If there’s a sweeter surprise than a tasty treat showing up unexpectedly on your porch, we can’t think of it!

Have you considered shipping a cake, but are worried it won’t arrive safe and sound, in all its tasty glory? Well you’re in luck. Today we’re showing you exactly what you need to do to know how to ship a cake in just five easy steps.
Shipping a Cake in 5 Easy Steps
They say it’s the thought that counts, and that is true…in fact, we don’t know anyone who wouldn’t enjoy the sentiment, time and thoughtfulness that goes into sending a cake. But if you’re serious about wanting to ship a cake, keep in mind that some cakes are more suitable for shipping than others.
Dense cakes (like carrot cake, cheesecake, fruitcake or pound cake) tend to tolerate the shipping process better, and they’re more likely to arrive intact and still pretty.
Lighter cakes, or those with very fancy decorations, will generally be a bit more tricky to ship. And of course, you want to make sure that you’re shipping cakes that are on the less-perishable side. Frosting made with a lot of dairy or eggs, or any ingredients that typically require refrigeration, may not be the best idea.
You’ll Need
The first thing you want to do is gather your supplies. You’ll want to have the following on hand so you can properly wrap and pack your cake so it shows up in perfect condition and ready to enjoy.
- Cake Box
- Shipping Box
- Cold Packs
- Filler
- Shipping Tape
- Plastic Wrap
Step #1 – Package the Cake
Ready to learn how to mail a cake that’ll survive the trip? Our secret tip: freeze the cake before shipping it! Genius, right?
Remove the cake from the freezer just before you want to ship it. Without letting it thaw, wrap the cake tightly with plastic wrap. Using multiple layers will better the chance of your sweet treat successfully making the journey.
Stuck on the idea of sending a specific type of cake you’re worried may not travel well? You might still be able to! Given the right packaging, even those more fragile cakes may still be an option. Cutting a cake into smaller pieces and wrapping them individually is a great alternative to shipping a whole cake.
Use an appropriately-sized cake box, with not too much room, to ensure the cake stays in place throughout the shipping process. You’ll want to pack the cake box inside a larger shipping box, and it’s not a bad idea to use cold packs.
Step #2 – Line Shipping Box with Cold Packs
You want the cake box to fit as tightly as possible inside the shipping box. Using ice packs in between the two boxes is the perfect way to create a snug fit. If you’re using dry ice, remember to use gloves when packing the box.
Step #3 – Seal the Box with Shipping Tape
Seal your shipping box well enough to prevent any terrible mishaps while the cake is in transit. Tape along the sides and the midseam where the flaps come together on both the top and the bottom of the shipping box.
Step #4 – Label the Outside of the Box
In addition to an address label, it’s smart to create both “Fragile” and “Keep Upright” labels. Whether you’re shipping perishables, or breakables, the right label can help ensure carriers keep your packages upright and in a safe transport position. Because the last thing anyone wants is an upside down cake on their doorstep! Keep your cake safe from the moment you put it in the box with any one of our Fragile and Keep Upright-themed labels.
Step #5 – Choose the Right Shipping Method
If you’re shipping cake during the summer or in a particularly warm part of the year, or if the recipient lives far away, consider investing in expedited shipping methods to ensure the cake arrives as quickly as possible and doesn’t spoil.

My cakes have glazes/ frostings and was told the glazes/frostings need to be packaged seperately in a small plastic dish etc that customer would just apply to cake themselves since the frozen cake would need to be wrapped in plastic wrap when frozen. I love these boxes but are there any that allow space to add additional container for glaze etc?
